US Congress Deadlock Leads to 15th Government Shutdown Over Healthcare and Immigration
The US Congress is at a standstill over a stopgap funding bill, leading to the 15th government shutdown since 1981. Republicans and Democrats are locked in a battle over health insurance subsidies, Medicaid cuts, and immigration policies.
Republicans are pushing for a continuing resolution to keep government funding at current levels until November 21. They are open to discussing a fix for expiring Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax breaks but want to handle it separately. Meanwhile, Democrats demand the renewal of expanded health insurance subsidies for ACA insurance buyers and want to prohibit President Trump from unilaterally ignoring ACA provisions or withholding funds.
Democrats are seeking to include provisions in the financing bill that would extend expiring ACA subsidies, reverse Medicaid cuts, and prevent reductions in foreign aid and public media funding. Republicans, however, accuse Democrats of trying to use the bill to provide government health insurance for immigrants in the US illegally, a claim Democrats deny. The Democrats' plan would extend subsidies for 24 million Americans, with the most significant impact in Republican-controlled states that haven't expanded Medicaid.
Republicans support the 'One Big Beautiful Bill' that increased defence and immigration enforcement spending, rolled back green energy spending, and made cuts to Medicare. Democrats want to roll back these restrictions, which would provide health coverage for seven million Americans by 2035.
The shutdown continues as Republicans and Democrats remain at odds over health insurance subsidies, Medicaid cuts, and immigration policies. If ACA subsidies expire, health insurance costs will increase significantly for millions of Americans. Republicans are open to discussing ACA fixes but want to handle them separately, while Democrats insist on including them in the stopgap funding bill.
