US-China Trade Tension: Donald Trump Finds It Difficult to Reach an Agreement with Xi Jinping Amid Disputes Over Trade Tariffs and Restrictions

President Donald Trump has ripped into Chinese President Xi Jinping as "tough" and "intractable" in a fresh social media blast, accusing China of allegedly breaching their trade agreement amid escalating tensions between the two superpowers.

"I've always gotten along with President Xi of China, but he's a bloody hard nut to crack when it comes to sealing a deal," Trump THREW DOWN in a fiery post on his Truth Social forum yesterday, amid mounting disagreements on the earlier trade truce they'd established.

On Monday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt hinted that our fearless leader would hold discussions with Xi to resolve disputes surrounding their tariff agreement, as well as broader trade matters.

Back in May, US and Chinese delegates had reached a surprising deal in Geneva that saw US duties on Chinese imports drop from a staggering 145% to a more manageable 30%. In response, China reciprocated by slashing its tariffs on US imports from 125% to 10%.

Analysts viewed this deal as a breath of fresh air, offering a glimmer of hope in the face of intensifying trade disputes. However, it raised eyebrows due to the vast chasm between both nations on the tariff question.

But on Monday, China's Ministry of Commerce shouted back that the US has flagrantly violated the deal. It added that China would have no choice but to retaliate to safeguard its interests.

American missteps, according to the Commerce Ministry, included:

  1. The halting of the sale of computer chip design software to Chinese firms.
  2. Halting the use of Chinese-made chips in tech powerhouse Huawei.
  3. Putting Chinese students' visas in jeopardy, potentially upending their academic careers.

The ministry also accused the US of violating a January agreement reached during a call between Xi and Trump regarding an earlier phone conversation.

Last week, Trump took aim at China on social media, claiming they were completely ignoring their agreement with the US. Details about which aspects of the May tariffs deal were being flouted by China remain unspecified.

However, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer reportedly argued later in media outlets that China had failed to eliminate non-tariff barriers that discriminated against US goods, as stipulated in the deal.

Just 24 hours after a US trade court ruled that Trump stepped over the line in imposing most of his tariffs on Chinese imports under an emergency powers act, a federal appeals court reinstated the ruling. Lord have mercy!
