US-China Relations to be Centerpiece of Park University's Hauptmann Lecture Series

David C. Kang, a renowned expert on East Asian security, will be the speaker for this year's Dr. Jerzy Hauptmann Distinguished Guest Lecture Series. The lecture, titled "Managing U.S.-China Relations: Diplomacy, Economics, and Regional Security," will take place on September 14, 2022, at the Jenkin and Barbara David Theater inside Alumni Hall on Park University's flagship Parkville Campus.

Admission to the lecture is free and open to the public, both in-person and via livestream on Park University's video portal at our website/hauptmannlecture.

Kang, the Maria Crutcher Professor of International Relations and professor of international relations, business, and East Asian languages and cultures at the University of Southern California, will focus on the media and Washington, D.C., establishment's worries about worsening relations between the U.S. and China. He will discuss the possibility of an inadvertent war between the two nations, but emphasize cautious management and the importance of diplomacy rather than expecting an inevitable conflict.

Kang's views on U.S.-China relations and the possibility of war in 2022 underscore the complex interdependence and strategic calculations on both sides, particularly concerning issues like the Korean Peninsula. He stresses the necessity of maintaining dialogue, cooperation, and crisis management mechanisms to manage tensions, supporting efforts like establishing dialogue with China on the Korean Peninsula and encouraging multilateral coordination aimed at denuclearization and regional stability.

David C. Kang's scholarly work has been widely recognised, with his articles and books earning numerous accolades. His book "American Grand Strategy and East Asian Security in the 21st Century" was published in 2017, and he co-authored the best article for 2007-09 by the European Journal of International Relations for a scholarly article titled "Testing Balance of Power Theory in World History."

The Hauptmann Lecture series was launched by the late Park University professor emeritus of political science and public administration, Jerzy Hauptmann, Ph.D., who taught at Park for more than 50 years. The series was established through the generosity of alumni, colleagues, and friends of Hauptmann upon his 40th anniversary at Park University.

Jerzy Hauptmann also launched the University's first graduate degree program in 1982, and in 2001, Park's School for Public Affairs was renamed the Hauptmann School of Public Affairs in his honour.

Don't miss this opportunity to hear David C. Kang's insights on U.S.-China relations and their impact on the world stage. Whether you attend in-person or via livestream, this lecture promises to be an enlightening and thought-provoking event.

The lecture, focusing on U.S.-China relations, will provide insights that are relevant to general-news and politics, as Professor David C. Kang discusses the current state of affairs between the two nations and its implications for the world. The event, open to the public both physically and digitally, is part of the Dr. Jerzy Hauptmann Distinguished Guest Lecture Series, a renowned platform for discussing significant international issues.
