US attorney Alex Acosta, implicated in Epstein's lenient court agreement, provides testimony at Capitol Hill hearings
In a significant development this week, Alex Acosta, the former U.S. Attorney, appeared on Capitol Hill to provide information as part of the House Oversight Committee's probe into the Epstein files. Acosta, who negotiated a plea deal with Jeffrey Epstein over 15 years ago, testified under oath and his testimony was being transcribed.
During the deposition, Acosta did not claim any responsibility to the Epstein survivors, nor did he admit that the plea deal with Epstein was a "sweetheart deal," as it is often referred to. He also stated that he never met Jeffrey Epstein or Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's associate.
However, some lawmakers claimed that Acosta did not come off as a credible witness during his deposition. House Oversight Chairman Rep. James Comer stated that the Democrats' main focus during the interview was on President Trump, which took away from more substantial questioning.
Comer's statement also claimed that Acosta said he never saw President Trump's name on any document related to Epstein. Furthermore, following Friday's voluntary deposition, Rep. Comer stated that Acosta provided useful information.
It is important to note that there are no publicly verified exact dates or instances when Acosta personally met Epstein or Maxwell. Acosta has repeatedly defended the plea deal, including after Epstein's arrest in 2019.
The plea deal ended a federal investigation into Epstein's sex-trafficking activities, a decision that has been heavily criticised. Despite the controversy, Acosta maintains that the deal was the best course of action at the time.
This testimony is a significant step in the ongoing investigation into Epstein's crimes and the actions of those involved. As more information comes to light, the public will continue to seek answers and accountability.
