In a statement on Tuesday, Uruguayan President Yamandu Orsi announced the death of José 'Pepe' Mujica, a former President known for his humble lifestyle and socially progressive administration.

Mujica, born on May 20, 1935, had been in the terminal stages of cancer and passed away on May 13, 2025.

Co-founder of the Movimiento de Liberacion Nacional-Tupamaros (MLN-T) in the 1960s, Mujica spent over a decade in prison due to his involvement with the leftist guerrilla group during Uruguay’s military dictatorship. He was later released and shifted his focus to formal democratic politics.

Mujica served as a deputy and senator before becoming Minister of Livestock, Agriculture, and Fisheries in the first government of the Frente Amplio, Uruguay’s leftist coalition. He fulfilled this role from 2005 to 2008.

Mujica's presidency from 2010 to 2015 was a period of sustainable economic growth and decreasing poverty levels in Uruguay. Throughout his leadership, he demonstrated minimalism in both lifestyle and security detail, favoring a Volkswagen Beetle over the presidential mansion and donating his presidential salary to charitable causes.

Known for his socially progressive policies, Mujica legalized abortion, marijuana, and same-sex marriage during his tenure. He also championed the resettlement of war refugees from Afghanistan.

Beyond Uruguay's borders, Mujica garnered international recognition for his unconventional leadership, critiques of consumerism, and advocacy for addressing global inequality.
