Hours After Israel's Attack on Iran, Merz Shifts to Diplomacy and Convenes Security Cabinet

Urges for Calm and Summons Security Council Meeting

Just as the dust settles from Israel's attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities, a phone call ensues between German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The conversation was a plea for cool heads and a warning of the domino effect such actions might bring about in the region.

Following the morning attacks on Iranian soil, Germany's leader calls for a mutual halt to violent escalation, emphasizing the potential for a catastrophic domino effect throughout the region. Merz emphasizes, "We urge both sides to cease actions that could ignite a larger conflagration and destabilize the entire Middle East." With this appeal, the government's security cabinet convenes in a bid to manage the situation.

Israel's assault shifted the winds of war, striking Tehran's capital and the Natans nuclear facility. Unconfirmed reports claim the attacks resulted in the deaths of Iranian army chief Mohammed Bagheri and Revolutionary Guards commander Hossein Salami. Iran retaliated with approximately 100 drone attacks on Israeli territory.

Merz Insists on Israel's Right to Self-Defense

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu shares the details of the military operations with Chancellor Merz, who then assembles the German government's security cabinet. Germany intends to use diplomatic channels to intervene, acting hand-in-hand with France, the UK, and the US. In a show of solidarity, Merz asserts, "Israel holds the right to defend its existence and the safety of its citizens." The Iranian nuclear program, he adds, "violates the stipulations of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and constitutes a severe threat to the entire region, particularly to the state of Israel." For years, the German government has raised concerns about Iran's advancement toward nuclear weapons.

International Atomic Energy Agency, in a resolution jointly introduced by Germany, France, and the UK, confirms Iran's failure to comply with its obligations to disclose its nuclear material enrichment activities. Facing mounting pressure, Iran has threatened to enhance its uranium enrichment once more.

As tensions rise in the Middle East, the security cabinet takes precautions to safeguard German citizens in Israel, Iran, and neighboring regions. With heightened vigilance, German authorities will also bolster the protection of Jewish and Israeli institutions within its borders.
