In a passionate plea on social media, co-host of The View Ana Navarro has urged disco legend Gloria Gaynor to reject her nomination for the 2025 Kennedy Center Honors. The reason for Navarro's appeal lies in the fact that the honors are being given under the chairmanship and hosting of former President Donald Trump.
Navarro, an outspoken critic of Trump, highlighted his polarizing views and actions, particularly his attacks on the rights and history of women, people of color, and the LGBTQ+ community. This is significant as Gaynor's 1978 disco anthem "I Will Survive" has become a global rallying cry for the LGBTQ+ community.
Navarro recalls meeting Gaynor at a concert where Gaynor gifted her a keychain that played "I Will Survive." She praised Gaynor's star power and iconic status but believes accepting the honor from Trump would be a mistake.
Navarro emphasized that while Gaynor "deserves all the flowers," accepting the honor from Trump would legitimize a man she calls "a stain on the prestige and significance of the Kennedy Center Honors." She fears that it would harm the award’s esteemed reputation.
Trump has confirmed that he was invited to host the Kennedy Center Honors program. This year's recipients include Gaynor, "Rocky" actor Sylvester Stallone, and the rock band Kiss. However, Trump's involvement has caused backlash from artists and cultural figures due to his rejection of many "woke" honorees.
