Urgent Security Agency Meeting Convened over Second Alleged Ceasefire Violation in Cambodia

An emergency meeting has been scheduled by the Ad Hoc Centre for the Thailand-Cambodia Border Situation for 9am on July 30. The announcement was made by Jirayu Huangsap, a government spokesperson and member of the Ad Hoc Centre, at 12.35am on the same day.

The meeting, which will take place at the National Security Council (NSC), aims to review the outcomes of the joint border commanders' discussions and determine Thailand's official response to the repeated ceasefire breaches. Jirayu emphasized the urgency of reassessing the diplomatic and military stance following overnight hostilities.

Recent reports of a drone attack on Wing 21 airbase in Ubon Ratchathani have been dismissed as false by Jirayu. He confirmed that no such incident has occurred.

The current international response to the repeated breaches of the ceasefire agreement centers on ASEAN-led diplomatic efforts, calls for restraint, and the establishment of an observer mechanism to monitor the ceasefire. ASEAN, under the leadership of Malaysia as chair in 2025, has played a key role in facilitating dialogue and de-escalation between the two countries.

On August 7, 2025, an Extraordinary General Border Committee meeting in Kuala Lumpur resulted in commitments to fully implement the ceasefire agreement and to establish an ASEAN-led observer mechanism to monitor the situation. Australia and other countries have publicly supported ASEAN's efforts, urging both Thailand and Cambodia to honor the ceasefire, exercise maximum restraint, comply with international law, and continue resolving the dispute peacefully in line with the UN Charter and the ASEAN Charter.

The ceasefire was announced on July 28, 2025, after days of deadly fighting that involved significant casualties, displacement, and military escalation, including airstrikes and artillery exchanges. The United Nations Security Council also held an emergency session to address the conflict, and there was diplomatic pressure from major powers including the United States and China to seek a peaceful resolution.

Thus, the international response primarily emphasizes diplomatic facilitation by ASEAN, monitoring mechanisms, and urging both parties to comply with ceasefire terms and international legal norms to prevent further escalation and promote stability in the region.

  1. The international business community is closely monitoring the ongoing political tensions and ceasefire breaches along the Thailand-Cambodia border, as the escalation could have significant economic implications for the region.
  2. As the deadline for the international crime court to rule on the investigation into the border dispute approaches, the general-news media outlets are focusing on the potential political and legal repercussions for both Thailand and Cambodia.
