Urgent plea from European leaders to Trump before Alaska meeting

In a significant development, preparations are underway for a bilateral meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This meeting, according to President Donald Trump, could be a precursor to a possible trilateral meeting including himself, as efforts continue to advance peace negotiations in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The meeting comes ahead of a scheduled meeting between Trump and Putin later this week. The United States President has been actively facilitating separate meetings with both leaders, aiming to stop further casualties and foster peace. However, Russia has yet to confirm Putin's participation in a direct summit with Zelenskyy, and there are mixed signals regarding Moscow's conditions.

The European Union and its allies are playing a crucial role in these negotiations, primarily through security guarantee commitments and diplomatic support. European leaders attended a White House meeting with Zelenskyy and Trump, signalling a united front in pursuing peace and stability.

Zelenskyy has maintained a firm stance against ceding Ukrainian territory, consistent with Ukraine’s constitution. Russia, on the other hand, has demanded control over the industrially significant Donbas region. This creates a critical point of negotiation tension, with Ukraine insisting it must be the ultimate decision-maker on its territorial integrity.

The coalition of the willing, an international effort to support Ukraine towards a lasting peace, has reiterated that no peace agreement can be decided without Ukraine. They have also stated that sanctions and other economic measures should be strengthened if Russia does not agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine.

Emmanuel Macron, addressing European concerns over Trump's comments about potential territorial swaps, clarified that there were no discussions on territorial swaps. He emphasized that international borders must not be changed by force, and that Ukraine must have robust and credible security guarantees to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

As the situation remains delicate, the leaders of several European nations, the EU, and Donald Trump held a meeting on Wednesday to discuss the ongoing negotiations. The coalition of the willing, led by the UK, France, and Germany, includes 31 countries that have pledged strengthened support for Ukraine.

The leaders are updating wider partners in the region on the day's discussions, with Sara Ruthven reporting from Washington. The coalition's aim is to ensure a peaceful resolution to the conflict, safeguarding Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

As the world watches, the upcoming meetings could potentially mark a significant step towards peace in Ukraine. The stakes are high, and the international community is united in its pursuit of a lasting solution.
