Urgent Communication to Public: Rui Tavares Advocates for Government and EU Dialogue

In a stirring social media post, the head honcho of the Livre party emphasized the urgency for both the Portuguese administration and the EU to swiftly pinpoint and broadcast security protocols to the populace.

"It's a must we keep our cool and stay vigilant, following the directives doled out by authorities, civil protection, and security forces," he underscored.

"The circumstances are murky," he continued in the post, warning of the "manipulation" of the predicament for the "propagation of misinformation," urging everyone to "re-share only information corroborated by trustworthy sources."

The Livre leader also pledged "unwavering readiness for whatever is required to mend the status quo."

On the very same day, REN — Redes Energeticas Nacionais acknowledged a widespread power outage engulfing Spain, Portugal, and parts of France, including the regions along the Spanish border. This calamity was said to be setting off the activation of the phased restoration plans for energy.

The power catastrophe struck at precisely 11:30 AM Lisbon time.

The Prime Minister revealed today that electricity would be back on in the ensuing hours, highlighting that the outage afflicting mainland territory was not pioneered in Portugal, but refrained from specifying the possible causes.

"We presume that from the Castelo de Bode and Tapada do Outeiro power plants, the entire electricity production system in Portugal can kick off, and in the imminent hours, the Portuguese citizens can regain their connection," declared Luís Montenegro to the press, midway through a Council of Ministers meeting, at the official residence of the Prime Minister in Lisbon.

Cause and Current Status of Power Outage:

The widespread power outage affecting Spain, Portugal, and France burst onto the scene on Monday, April 28, 2025. Although the exact cause remains unconfirmed, it's hypothesized to be linked to complications within the European electric grid, leading to national grid malfunctions in the Iberian Peninsula[1][2]. By Monday afternoon, electricity services incrementally resumed in several zones of Spain, including the Basque Country, and French power was successfully reinstated[1]. However, millions across Spain and Portugal may still face prolonged electricity outages, lasting between six to ten hours[1][2].

Impact and Current Status:

The blackout brought significant challenges to everyday life. Offices shut down, traffic was snarled, and transportation grinded to a halt in both Spain and Portugal[2]. Hospitals and emergency services relied on generators, while many gas stations halted operations[2]. Mobile network services experienced disruptions in some areas[2].

Portuguese Government's Response:

In response to the emergency situation, the Portuguese government summoned an urgent meeting at the Prime Minister's residence[2]. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro divulged that he had maintained contact with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and expressed that power would be reestablished by the end of the day[2]. The government's emergency strategy aimed to foster cooperation with Spain to boost the timely restoration of power.

Additional Measures and Coordination:

In light of the mobile network disruptions, residents were advised to turn to alternative means of communication, such as battery-powered radios[2]. Coordination between national grid management entities and international collaborators continues to be a priority in an effort to reroute electricity and reconnect impacted regions[1]. The situation is still under scrutiny by major Spanish electricity suppliers such as Endesa and Iberdrola[1].

"Following the head honcho's call for vigilance, the Portuguese administration and the EU are urged to swiftly address the energy crisis and share guidelines. The power outage affecting Spain, Portugal, and France is a reminder of the importance of preparedness in times of war-and-conflicts or politics-related general news. The government's response to the emergency, as seen with the urgent meeting, has been to maintain contact with counterparts and work towards timely restoration. In this situation, alternative means of communication like battery-powered radios become crucial as mobile network services may experience disruptions."

Free Party representative, Rui Tavares, called on the Government and the European Union yesterday to pinpoint the reasons behind the power outage and share safety advice with the public.
