Urgent Action Required: United Kingdom Car Market Unification - Act by Tuesday

The UK is facing mounting opposition over a new regulation that risks dividing the country's internal market by reinforcing two separate vehicle type approval regimes. The regulation in question, SI 2025/796, has been introduced by the relevant governmental department responsible for transport or road safety, but there is no publicly available official confirmation specifying an individual author.

This regulatory divergence could make new cars in Northern Ireland £4,000 more expensive than in Great Britain by 2026. Due to EU rules still applying in Northern Ireland, the same new car could cost £4,000 more in Northern Ireland than in Great Britain. This two-tier system is being criticized for creating a divided market, with Unionists and Brexiteers expressing outrage.

The regulation goes against the spirit of the 2016 Brexit vote, which was for the whole UK to leave the EU, not just parts of it. It undermines Northern Ireland's economic and constitutional ties with Great Britain and contradicts the principle of equal citizenship. The regulation is also believed to be the next step in the partitioning of the UK.

The Labour Government has introduced this regulation, creating a separate car market for Northern Ireland and another for Great Britain. This new market division is imposing costly and complex trade barriers, particularly harming manufacturers. The regulation has come into force and is enforcing a West-East Irish Sea Border.

The regulation is being scrutinised by the House of Lords Secondary Legislation Scrutiny Committee. The Committee needs to hear from citizens about their concerns regarding SI 2025/796 before noon on Tuesday, 22nd July. If you have concerns about the regulation and its impact on the UK's internal market and Northern Ireland's place in the Union, a short message expressing your concerns can make a difference. You can contact the Committee at [email protected].

This new border is causing controversy and raising questions about the integrity of the UK's internal market and the principle of Brexit. It is essential that the Committee hears the voices of the people to ensure that the UK's future is one of unity and fairness for all its citizens.
