Urge Action to Prevent UK Market Segregation - Time to Act is Tuesday

The introduction of a new regulation, SI 2025/796, by the Labour Government has sparked concern and debate in Northern Ireland. This regulation creates separate car markets in the UK for Great Britain and Northern Ireland, a move that is politically and legally significant and has the potential to undermine the principle of a single UK market.

The system, which follows on from the Road Vehicles (Type-Approval) Regulations 2025, is facing mounting opposition. It is believed that families in Northern Ireland will pay £4,000 more for the same car by 2026 due to this system, with new cars in Northern Ireland potentially costing £4,000 more expensive than in Great Britain by the same year.

The regulation contradicts Section 46 of the Internal Market Act and risks further dividing the United Kingdom's internal market, undermining the principle of a single UK market. The new car market system also imposes costly and complex trade barriers, particularly harming manufacturers, and could have wider consequences for fairness, economic unity, and constitutional integrity.

The system is being criticized by unionist politicians and Brexit supporters alike, with many arguing that it undermines Northern Ireland's economic and constitutional ties with Great Britain. The regulation has been sent to the House of Lords Secondary Legislation Scrutiny Committee for review, and the Committee needs to hear from citizens about their concerns regarding SI 2025/796 before noon on Tuesday, 22nd July.

A sample email template has been provided for concerned citizens to use when writing to the Committee. The email template states that the regulation should be flagged as politically and legally important and brought to the attention of the House, urging the Committee to take action to protect the principle of a single UK market and the economic well-being of Northern Ireland.

The new car market system risks breaking the principle of equal citizenship, and it is essential that the Committee hears the voices of citizens who are concerned about the potential impact of this regulation on their lives. If you have concerns about SI 2025/796, you can email your thoughts to [email protected]. It is crucial that the Committee understands the depth of feeling on this issue and takes action to protect the economic and constitutional integrity of the United Kingdom.
