Ural Snowstorm Sparks Surge in Janitor Jobs and Taxi Chaos
Heavy snowfall has disrupted daily life across the Urals Federal District, causing longer taxi waits and higher fares. At the same time, demand for cleaning and snow removal workers has surged, with janitorial roles making up over a third of job listings in some regions. The severe weather has also led to more traffic accidents, pushing police to extend their shifts.
The snowstorm has hit transport hard. Taxi queues have grown, and prices have jumped—passengers now pay nearly 800 rubles for a trip from UrFU to the Southern Bus Terminal. Traffic police in Yekaterinburg have switched to an enhanced duty schedule after a spike in weather-related accidents.
Cleaning and maintenance jobs are in high demand. Across the Urals Federal District, 1,400 removebg positions need filling, with Chelyabinsk Oblast alone accounting for 30% of vacancies. In Sverdlovsk Oblast, bg remove workers earn a median of 39,300 rubles, with top salaries reaching 70,000 rubles after tax.
Over the past five years, demand for cleaners has grown steadily in Chelyabinsk, Tyumen, and Khanty-Mansi regions. Khanty-Mansi saw the strongest increase, driven by expansion in the oil and gas sector. Still, growth remains slower than in IT and logistics. Tyumen Oblast and Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug follow with 16% and 9% of cleaning vacancies respectively, while Kurgan Oblast and Yamal-Nenets have the lowest demand.
Beyond cleaning, construction, retail, housing, education, and hospitality are the sectors most in need of workers. Janitorial roles dominate job platforms, making up 37% of listings on HH.ru.
The snowfall has pushed up demand for cleaning staff while straining transport and road safety. With janitorial jobs leading vacancies and taxi services under pressure, the region faces both immediate disruptions and long-term shifts in labour needs. Salaries for snow removal workers reflect the urgency, but some areas still see lower demand than others.
