From Rajasthan Royals to Cricketing Stardom: Vaibhav Suryavanshi's Surprising Journey
'Upon observing him in tears in the dressing room...': Vaibhav's career change spurred by VVS Laxman's advice, BCCI's support for Dravid.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the 14-year-old sensation, has captured the spotlight after the Rajasthan Royals invested INR 1.1 crore in him, and not too long ago, he set the casaphere ablaze with a historic 35-ball 100 against the Gujarat Titans in Jaipur on April 28, 2025. But, beyond the glitz and glamour of the IPL, it's a man named VVS Laxman who holds a significant place in his journey.
Vaibhav's path crossed with Laxman during a BCCI's U-19 one-day Challenger tournament. His impressive performance in an inter-district senior tournament in Bihar earned him a spot in this competition. Laxman, known for his keen eye for talent, selected him for an U-19 quadrangular series against England and Bangladesh. One fateful day, however, what transpired behind the scenes was far from triumphant. In a match for India B, Vaibhav was left in tears after being dismissed for 36. On witnessing this emotional outburst, Laxman stepped in to offer some encouraging words.
Laxman reportedly said to Vaibhav, "We don't only see the runs here. We see people who have the skill for the long run." His words of wisdom resonated with Vaibhav, and it was this faith in his talent that kicked off his meteoric rise. The BCCI has backed him too, with his mentor watching his progress closely.
Vaibhav made his IPL debut on April 19 against Lucknow Super Giants at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. On his maiden game, he showcased his big-hitting ability with a 34-run knock, in true Vaibhav Suryavanshi style. His dismissal left him in tears, but it was his resilience that shone through.
But it was on Monday that Vaibhav truly set the IPL ablaze, crushing seven boundaries and 11 sixes en route to a 35-ball century, the fastest-ever by an Indian in IPL history and the second-fastest overall. Pairing up with Yashasvi Jaiswal, they stitched a match-winning 166-run opening stand as Rajasthan chased down 210 in just 15.5 overs.
