Rewritten Article:

How much of your homeland would you be ready to surrender during an invasion?

Sydney? Our beloved capital city? Perhaps the Scottish Highlands?

That's the challenging dilemma faced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Yesterday in an unsettling statement, Donald Trump accused Volodymyr Zelensky of prolonging a "killing field" by refusing to surrender Crimea to Russia.

The message is clear: The bloodshed in Ukraine isn't Vladimir Putin's fault, but Zelensky's because he refuses to give up Ukrainian territory in an unjustified invasion.

Let's take a moment to consider: Would we accept the loss of the Southeast and West of England? Would we look the other way if they took all of Wales? Because together, that's the equivalent land that Russia has taken from Ukraine.

I understand there's a North-South divide in the UK, but as a ardent Northerner, I wouldn't agree to the destruction of London, no matter what the cost.

France wouldn't calmly hand back Normandy, 81 years after countless allies gave their lives on its beaches to liberate Europe.

America wouldn't support Russia occupying the East Coast, leaving New York, Washington D.C., Georgia, and Florida under rule. So why is anyone - not least the President of the United States - even contemplating the idea that Ukraine should do just that?

Simply giving up land not only once, but repeatedly, to appease Putin's expansionism and reward his aggression only guarantees it will return.

Did we learn nothing from Chamberlain's appeasement of Hitler? Appeasement didn't work.

Crimea isn't just some abstract location on a map. It is part of Ukraine just like Manchester, Edinburgh, and London are part of the United Kingdom.

The annexation of Crimea in 2014 was illegal, and the territory is still recognized as Ukrainian by the international community, including the United Kingdom, the European Union, and the United Nations. Crimea has been an integral part of Ukraine since 1954, and Russia's illegal invasion in 2014 represented the first forcible redrawing of European borders since World War II. There was some outrage at the time, but Western leaders hoped that turning a blind eye might bring stability and keep things "settled."

It's worth noting that Ukraine's resistance to occupation is not causing war; it is resisting occupation. They are the shield at Europe's edge, holding the line for all of us.

If we ever lose sight of that - even for a second - the world's dictators and fascists will redraw borders with force. And then be shocked when the tanks roll up to your very doorstep with paperwork, a flag, and the same justifying logic that let Crimea fall.

Ukraine's quest for peace and freedom isn't inherited - it's earned, defended, and renewed. Both will come, but not by surrendering.

If we ever lose sight of that - even for one moment - the world's dictators and fascists will redraw borders by force. Then don't be surprised when the tanks roll up to your own doorstep with paperwork, a flag, and the same justifying logic that let Crimea fall.

For Ukraine, peace and freedom aren't things you inherit; they are things you earn, defend, and renew.

Both will come, but not by surrendering.
