Upgraded Emergency Preparedness Gear Introduced in Bremen
German Red Cross Bremen Branch Acquires Disaster Protection Equipment for 1 Million Euros
The Bremen branch of the German Red Cross (DRK) has made significant strides in enhancing its disaster response capabilities, acquiring a range of equipment worth over 1 million euros. The new acquisitions, unveiled on July 29, 2023, were made possible with the help of Senator Dr. Claudia Schilling, Senator for Social Affairs.
The new equipment enables the DRK Bremen branch to provide accommodation and care to a larger number of people in emergency situations. According to Bernd Blüm, chairman of the DRK Bremen branch e.V., the new acquisitions allow for accommodation and care for up to 5,000 people in case of an emergency.
The equipment, stored at the DRK disaster protection center on Arsterdamm, includes a small transporter, a field kitchen, ten inflatable emergency tents, suitable lighting systems and tent heaters, and materials for emergency power supply. A mobile soup kitchen is also part of the acquisitions.
In addition, 1,800 beds for adults and children, each with 5,000 blankets, emergency blankets, and bed linen, were also acquired. Four shower containers, two toilet containers, one sanitation container, four hot water devices, and 5,000 hygiene sets were also part of the acquisitions.
Senator Dr. Claudia Schilling emphasized the need to no longer rely on the stability of supply chains and energy supply due to the changed global political situation and increased frequency of extreme weather events. She stated that the new acquisitions from the DRK Bremen branch enable the safe accommodation and care for Bremen residents in case of an acute emergency situation.
The funds for the acquisitions come from the 500 million euro budget allocated by the Bremen Senate in April 2023 to strengthen the resilience of Bremen due to the consequences of the Ukraine war and the associated energy crisis.
With these new acquisitions, the DRK Bremen branch has expanded its capabilities to accommodate and care for a larger number of people in emergency situations, up to 5,000, thanks to the new acquisitions. This significant increase from past deployments marks a crucial step forward in the branch's ability to respond effectively to emergencies and provide essential support to those in need.
