Election Commission of India Introduces New Balance for Enhanced Election Process

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced new balance guidelines for printing ballot papers and EVM symbols, aiming to enhance clarity, readability, and security. These changes are part of the 28 initiatives taken by the ECI in the past 6 months to streamline and improve election processes and increase convenience for voters.

Starting with the upcoming elections, the EVM Ballot Papers will be printed on 70 GSM paper and will feature several notable changes. For Assembly Elections, the EVM Ballot Papers will be pink in color, following specific RGB values. The candidate's photograph will be printed in color, occupying three-fourths of the photo space for better visibility. The font size will be increased to 30 and will be in bold for clarity.

Serial numbers of candidates and NOTA will be printed in the international form of Indian numerals. The new balance also mandates the use of the upgraded EVMs, which will be put to use in the Bihar assembly elections this year.

The ECI has revised existing guidelines under Rule 49B of the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961. However, the details about the 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' mentioned in the article have not been specified.

The new balance has sparked a political storm in Bihar, with opposition parties claiming it to be an attempt by the ruling BJP to remove voters who favor opposition parties. Leaders such as Rahul Gandhi, Tejashwi Yadav, and Mahua Moitra have criticized the EC for conducting the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar in haste just before the polls.

The ECI's reforms, however, are a result of the SIR in Bihar, which was carried out to ensure a fair and transparent election process. The commission emphasizes that the new balance is aimed at enhancing the clarity and readability of EVM Ballot Papers and improving voter confidence by implementing security features to prevent tampering.

Amidst the political debate, the focus remains on the significant changes introduced by the ECI, which are expected to bring about a more transparent and efficient election process in the upcoming elections, starting with Bihar.
