Updated report: Russian Casualties Quantified by Ukraine at 08:32

In the midst of August 2025, the Ukraine-Russia conflict has reached a significant turning point, with civilian casualties reaching a three-year high. July 2025 saw at least 1,674 civilian casualties, including 286 fatalities and 1,388 injuries, marking the highest monthly toll since May 2022.

This escalation is largely attributed to the increased use of Russian glide bombs, long-range missiles, and tactical drones targeting civilians and military logistics routes. As a result, the total civilian casualties documented since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022 now stand at least 13,883 killed (including 726 children) and 35,548 injured (including 2,234 children).

Military casualties and losses on both sides are substantial. According to Ukrainian General Staff estimates up to August 16, 2025, Russian forces have suffered approximately 1,069,050 casualties (killed and wounded), including 1,010 casualties in the last 24 hours alone. Destroyed Russian military equipment includes over 11,112 tanks, 23,135 armored fighting vehicles, 31,540 artillery systems, 1,467 multiple rocket launchers, 422 warplanes, 340 helicopters, more than 51,000 tactical drones, 28 warships and cutters, plus 1 submarine, over 58,700 vehicles and fuel trucks, and nearly 3,942 pieces of special military equipment.

Confirmed officer deaths on the Russian side amount to approximately 5,432, with Ukrainian officer fatalities estimated at around 5,988.

In the diplomatic arena, European countries, including France, Italy, Germany, Poland, the UK, Finland, and the EU Commission, have issued a joint statement supporting Donald Trump's peace efforts in Ukraine. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko has expressed great war-weariness among the people of Ukraine, emphasising the need for negotiations with Russia. The White House is considering a three-way summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and US President Donald Trump in Alaska.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has demanded Ukraine's involvement in negotiations over an end to the Russian invasion. The joint statement also welcomes Donald Trump's work to end the killing in Ukraine and create a fair peace.

Klitschko has called for a "diplomatic solution" with Russia, leaving open the possibility of territorial concessions. The joint statement emphasises that international borders should not be changed by force and that the current frontline should be the starting point for negotiations.

In a recent meeting, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky coordinated with representatives from the UK, USA, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, and Poland. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron have reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and a just and lasting peace. They have also expressed their support for US President Donald Trump's efforts to end the Ukraine war.

However, the conflict continues to take a heavy toll. An oil refinery in the Russian city of Saratov was reportedly damaged in a drone attack, causing a major fire and explosions. Russian leader Vladimir Putin has reportedly changed his strategy in response to Trump's ultimatum, giving the impression that Russia is ready to negotiate the distribution of land.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warns that the absence of "real peace" could give Russia the opportunity to invade again. He has emphasised that the path to peace for Ukraine should be determined jointly and only jointly with Ukraine.
