Conference Highlights
- June 2025, 10:18 CET
At the party conference, the Thuringian Left saw a change in leadership, with Katja Maurer, a 34-year-old member of the state parliament, taking on the role of party chairwoman. Ralf Plötner, formerly of East Thuringia, was elected co-chairman. A proposal by the former board that aimed to loosen the ban on holding multiple offices was voted down by the delegates.
Surprising New Leadership
Katja Maurer, a social anthropologist and a new addition to the state parliament since 2019, received 91.4% of the votes for the party chairmanship. Meanwhile, Ralf Plötner, a seasoned former state parliament member, earned 81.9% of the votes for co-chair.
The party members rejected the proposed amendment, which would have enabled Christian Schaft - parliamentary group chairman in the Thuringian state parliament - to hold both the position of party chairman and leader of the parliamentary group simultaneously. 50.8% of the delegates voted in favor of this separation, insisting it be upheld, while 41.5% voted against it.
Senior Collaborators Garner Praise
Maurer and Plötner were welcomed to the stage following the vote on the proposed amendment. In her speech, Maurer highlighted, "I hadn't planned on running for the position. This wasn't an easy decision."
After the election of their successors, Christian Schaft and former chairwoman Ulrike Grosse-Rötig received much applause from the delegates for their recent work.
The Thuringian Left conference continues on Sunday, June 15th, in Ilmenau.
