Update on the 2024 Season of the Bronx Science Boys' High School Volleyball Squad
Bronx Science Boys' Volleyball Team Secures Easy Win Against Harry S. Truman
On March 7th, 2024, the Bronx Science Boys' Volleyball Team took to the court for their second to last regular season game before the playoffs. The match was against Harry S. Truman's Boys team, and the atmosphere in the gym was light and stress-free due to the expectation of an easy win.
Several members of the Girls' Varsity Team and an individual were involved in preparing the gym for the game. As the teams began their pre-game routines, the boys started peppering to warm up, while both teams engaged in serving drills, passing drills, and attacking drills to sharpen their skills.
Despite the absence of one player, Ason Jiang '24, who was given a rest day, the team's performance was strong and unwavering. The team's success is dependent on the performance of the setters, and for the 2023-24 school year, Ryan Cheng '27 and Kishan Patel '26 are the freshman and sophomore setters. The team's offense for the upcoming season will be dominated by Aiden Dowd '26 and Wu.
Many of the starters have club volleyball experience, some even ranking high in national competitions. Common pre-game routines in volleyball to reduce performance anxiety and maintain focus include physical warm-ups, mental preparation, and team rituals. Dynamic warm-ups and light aerobic activities, sport-specific exercises, and mental routines and pre-game rituals help players physically ready their bodies while also stabilizing their mental state.
The game consisted of two sets, each set being the first to reach 25 points. Bronx Science won the game in less than an hour, keeping their opponents' scores significantly lower. Coach Skilins anticipates a skilled team for the upcoming season, and with their strong performance, the Bronx Science Boys' Volleyball Team is well on their way to making a mark in the playoffs.
However, the team's journey was cut short as they lost in the second round of the playoffs on May 17th, 2024. Despite this setback, the team's dedication and teamwork throughout the season have shown great promise for the future.
