Update on Current Law Enforcement Actions in Washington D.C.

In recent developments, a noticeable increase in law enforcement presence, including federal agents, has been observed around Georgetown University’s campus. This change in the usual law enforcement environment for the Georgetown community comes as part of a broader Trump administration action that placed nearly 850 federal officers, including DEA and FBI agents, to assist with policing in Washington, D.C. due to claims of escalating crime.

Despite this change, the Georgetown University Police Department (GUPD) and the Capitol Campus Department of Public Safety (DPS) remain the primary law enforcement entities for the university's campuses. The university has emphasized that it expects any law enforcement activity, including that by federal agents, to respect the rights of community members and follow due process.

The presence of federal agents has, however, generated unease and concern among students. Student groups and the student government have expressed their concerns, feeling that it introduces a militarized atmosphere not conducive to campus life. Leaders from the College Democrats and Student Association called the federal presence "concerning" and "dangerous," criticizing it as a political tactic that uses intimidation rather than enhancing safety. They noted little to no interaction between federal agents and students but opposed normalizing the heavy federal law enforcement presence.

The university has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the respectful relationship it has with local Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) precincts and does not anticipate significant changes to this relationship despite the increased federal presence.

Community members are encouraged to report anything that concerns them on the university's campuses by contacting GUPD at 202-687-4343 or Capitol Campus DPS at 202-662-9325.

Access to a hub of resources for mental and emotional well-being is available through Every Hoya Cares for students, faculty, and staff who may be impacted by these recent developments. The safety and security of the community remains the top priority at Georgetown University.
