News Article: Velorace Cycling Event in Dresden Causes Traffic and Transport Changes

This weekend, Dresden will host the Velorace cycling event, with races for all ages and abilities taking place from August 8 to 10, 2025. As the city gears up for the event, the authorities have planned specific traffic diversion routes and bus/tram reroutes to ensure safety.

Traffic Diversion Routes

Major roads along the race course in the city center will be temporarily closed during the event. Motorists can bypass the race areas by following signposted alternative routes, primarily using outer ring roads and less congested streets. Specific diversion routes will be set up on streets parallel to the race route, often directing traffic to main roads like Stauffenbergallee and Königsbrücker Straße.

Bus and Tram Reroutes

Several tram lines, including lines 3, 4, and 8, as well as bus lines 1, 64, 68, 10, 11, and 12, will be rerouted or temporarily suspended during the race hours. Replacement shuttle services may be provided in affected areas to maintain connectivity.

Line 1, for example, will have a shared operation from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with altered routes in both the east and west. Line 64 will be rerouted between Schandauer Street and Waldschlösschenbrücke from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Line 11 will be rerouted between Anton-/Leipziger Street and Postplatz via Neustädter Market, Augustusbruecke, and Theaterplatz from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Line 12 will run from Leutewitz only to Fetscherplatz and then back to Leutewitz via Comeniusplatz from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with an additional reroute between Freiberger Street and Pirnaischer Platz from 8:00 AM. Line 68 will run a reroute from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM between Tiergarten Street and Dr. Külz Ring via Strehlener Street, Hauptbahnhof, and Georgplatz.

Additional Notes

The race is expected to cause closures primarily from morning to early afternoon. Updated schedules and route maps will be posted by Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe (DVB) closer to the event date. Motorists and public transport users are advised to check DVB’s official announcements in the days leading to August 10 for detailed reroute information.

On Sunday, from around 6:00 to approximately 17:00, the following route will be completely closed to traffic: Terrassenufer - Devrientstraße - Könneritzstraße - Ammonstraße - Tunnel Wiener Platz - Wiener Straße - Gellertstraße - Lennéplatz - Lennéstraße - Straßburger Platz - Stübelallee - Wende Stübelallee/Müller-Berset-Straße - Comeniusplatz - Fetscherstraße - Käthe-Kollwitz-Ufer (outside the city) - Goetheallee - Lothringer Weg - Vogesenweg - Käthe-Kollwitz-Ufer (inside the city) - Sachsenplatz - Terrassenufer.

Pedestrians should expect delays when crossing the cycling route on Sunday. Many traffic lights will be deactivated on Sunday. So-called "shunting points" will be set up at various street sections where cyclists will cross DVB lines in groups.
