Upcoming Remake of Forbidden Planet Led by Brian K. Vaughan
In 1956, the original Forbidden Planet hit theaters, becoming a part of a wave of space-themed sci-fi excitement that included When Worlds Collide (1951), The War of the Worlds (1953), and Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956). The film received a Best Visual Effects Oscar nomination, but lost to The Ten Commandments.
Now, over six decades later, the rights issues surrounding Forbidden Planet have been resolved, paving the way for a new version of the classic sci-fi film. Award-winning creator Brian K. Vaughan, known for his work on comics for both Marvel and DC, indie comics series such as Y: The Last Man, Paper Girls, and Saga, and TV series like Lost and Under the Dome, is scripting the new take on the 1956 film.
Robby the Robot, a character from the original Forbidden Planet, is expected to feature in Vaughan's remake. Robby the Robot is one of cinema's earliest examples of a robot character with an actual personality, paving the way for Star Wars' chatty droids, Futurama's happily sleazy Bender, and many more.
Emma Watts is aboard to produce the new Forbidden Planet. However, details about the director for the remake and how Vaughan's version of the story will update the original have yet to be revealed.
The news of Vaughan's involvement in Forbidden Planet comes from Deadline. For the latest updates on Marvel, Star Wars, Star Trek, DC Universe, and Doctor Who, visit io9.
