Upcoming Queer Movie Releases: April 2025 Announcements
Reimagined Article
Hey there! Here's a fun chat with author Marshall Thornton, dishing on all the juicy tidbits fans crave.
A: Hey Marshall, what's up? Where you hanging out?
Marshall: Hi! I'm chillin' in the cold climes of Northern Lower Michigan.
A: Keepin' it cozy, huh? Any juicy beans about your home life you wanna share?
Marshal: Nah, not really. Just me and my 15-year-old Chiweenie, Louie.
A: That's cool. What's the most incredible accomplishment that's got you all chuffed?
Marshall: I'd say finishing the 18th book in my Nick Nowak/Dom Reilly series. That's a major milestone!
A: What's inspired or challenged ya most when it comes to penning your mysteries, and can you share your writing process?
Marshall: I don't bother with no fancy outlines; once I get fired up, I start writin'! But they do come in handy when things get messy or when I'm rewriting.
A: You've no doubt answered this question a gazillion times, but here goes: Are you a plotter or a pantser?
Marshall: I don't have the patience for those outlines; I start writin' and if things get crazy, I just roll with it!
A: How do ya keep a continuous storyline goin' strong for years?
Marshall: Back in the day, my therapist said, "We ain't tryin' to change who you are; we're just makin' you better at bein' who you are." That's some solid advice for characters, too. You wanna keep 'em consistent, but leave room for growin'.
One thing's always bugged me about mystery series, the characters ain't ever actin' normal after goin' through some nasty stuff. So in all my series, I make sure the characters are always respondin' emotionally to what's happened to 'em. That fosters some character development, y'know?
A: Ever dealt with any homophobia regarding your books? Spill the tea!
Marshall: Yep, last year, some homophobes crept up while I was usin' Facebook ads. I've learnt to steer clear of Messenger ads since then, and I've been takin' it easy on Facebook ads in general.
A: What got ya into gay mysteries in the first place? Who's been your literary alter ego?
Marshall: I've been readin' gay mysteries for about 20 years before I even considered writin' one! Back in the late '80s, I did this astrological natal chart, and it said I'd be a mystery writer. I thought that was a bunch of baloney at the time, but around 2008 and 2009, I needed a way to kick-start my writin', and I found this outlet for short stories. That led to the Boystown books, from which my other series spun off.
As for my role models, I've had a ton over the years. Joseph Hansen, Raymond Chandler, and Sue Grafton are definitely up there, but there's plenty more. I just recently plowed through the whole Slow Horses series by Mick Herron. I'm hangin' out for the new Michael Connelly series. Man, I wish I had more time to read!
A: Okay, here are the last two questions: What's the lowdown on your latest release or work in progress? And where can readers cop your books?
Marhsall: My fourth Dom Reilly book, A Week Away, drops on April 28th. It's all about what would happen if the real Dom Reilly's son turned up lookin' for him. I couldn't resist writin' that story!
As for where to buy my books, physical copies can be found in bookshops and libraries. Many of my books can be ordered by your local store or library. Some of my stuff is available everywhere, while some stays exclusive to Amazon and Kindle Unlimited.
