Press Conference Announcement: Human Rights Situation in Crimea and the Fate of Political Prisoners
The Society for Endangered Peoples e.V. (GfbV) is hosting a press conference on September 25, 2025, at 11 am in Berlin. The event will take place at the GfbV office, located at Reinhardtstraße 27b, 10117 Berlin.
The topic of the press conference is the human rights situation in Crimea and the fate of political prisoners. Dr. Franziska Davies, a prominent Eastern European historian and advocate for the rights of Crimean Tatars, will be present to advocate for the release of Appaz Kurtamet, a Crimean Tatar political prisoner.
Before his arrest in July 2022, Appaz Kurtamet worked for an IT company and taught Crimean Tatar at the Crimean Tatar Cultural Center in Odessa. In April 2023, he was sentenced to seven years in prison for alleged support of terrorism. Aishe Kurtamet, the mother of Appaz Kurtamet and wife of Khalil Kurtamet, another political prisoner, will also advocate for their release at the press conference.
Sarah Reinke, head of the human rights work of the GfbV, will report on the situation of the Crimean Tatars and the human rights situation on the peninsula as a whole. She will present the current GfbV memorandum on the human rights situation in Crimea during the press conference.
Elvis Çolpuh, Crimean Tatar human rights activist and founder of the European platform "Assembly of Crimean Organizations", will also participate in the press conference. Crimean Tatar activists and other guests will share their insights on the current situation on the peninsula and the fates of political prisoners.
Registration for participation is required and can be done at [email protected]. After the statements, there will be an opportunity for questions, photos, and individual interviews. Interview requests should be announced in advance to coordinate appointments.
It is important to note that out of the current 220 political prisoners from Crimea, 133 are Crimean Tatars, despite them making up no more than 12% of the population.
For press inquiries, please contact [email protected] or 0551 49906-21. For content-related questions, contact Sarah Reinke at [email protected] or 0551 / 49906-13.
