Lünen's Mayoral Runoff Election: Martina Förster-Teutenberg (SPD) and Dr. Christian Klicki (CDU) Square Off

On September 14, 2025, the city of Lünen held a runoff election for the mayoral position, with the race narrowed down to two candidates: Martina Förster-Teutenberg (SPD) and Dr. Christian Klicki (CDU).

The initial election on the same day saw a strong showing for the SPD, emerging as the strongest faction with 27.11 percent of the votes. Andreas Dahlke (GFL) came in a close second with 24.08 percent. The CDU followed closely behind with 25.0 percent, while the Alternative for Germany (AfD) came in third with 17.68 percent and 8 seats in the city council.

The first round of voting did not produce a clear winner, as none of the candidates received the required absolute majority. As a result, a runoff election was scheduled for September 28, 2025.

In the first round, Martina Förster-Teutenberg received the most votes with 39.98 percent, while Dr. Christian Klicki came in second with 36.94 percent.

The voter turnout for the initial election was 51.5 percent, higher than in the 2020 local elections (41.09 percent). The polling stations opened at 8:25 AM and closed at 18:00. By 16:00, the estimated total voter turnout, including postal votes, was 49.74 percent.
