The much-anticipated runoff election for the position of Mayor in Essen, Germany is scheduled for September 28, 2025. The runoff candidates are incumbent Thomas Markus Kufen (CDU) and Julia Edelgard Petra Klewin (SPD).

Voters have several options to cast their ballots in this important election.

In-Person Voting

In-person voting at the Town Hall is expected to begin by the end of the week. For those who prefer voting in person, further information about the voting locations and times will be available at www.our website/kommunalwahlen.

Mail-In Voting

Absentee materials can be sent to any address in or outside Germany. Voters can use the form on the back of the voter notification letter for mail-in voting. Absentee ballots for the runoff will be automatically sent to those who have requested them.

For joint applications by spouses or family members, personal information and signature are required for each eligible voter. Required information for informal mail-in voting applications includes name, address, date of birth, personal signature, and the address to which the absentee materials should be sent.

Voters can also submit their mail-in voting application informally by letter, fax, or email.

Online Voting

Voters can use the QR code on the back of the voter notification letter for online voting. Online voting can also be accessed at www.our website/briefwahl-online.

Important Dates

Absentee ballot requests can be made until Saturday, September 27, at 12:00 PM. Ballot envelopes must be sent in time to arrive by 4:00 PM on election day.

Eligibility

Eligibility for the runoff election includes German or EU citizenship, age 16 or older, residence in Essen since August 29, 2025, and no voting disqualification. A valid ID or passport can also be used to vote in the runoff.

Replacement Materials

If absentee ballots are not received by the beginning of next week, replacement materials can be requested.
