Upcoming Jesus films directed by Mel Gibson set for release in spring 2027
Mel Gibson, the acclaimed director known for his historical epics, is set to release two new films about Jesus Christ in spring 2027. Titled "The Resurrection of the Christ," these upcoming films are sequels to Gibson's controversial crucifixion film, "The Passion of the Christ," released in 2004.
The two-part release, scheduled for March 26, 2027 (Part One) and May 6, 2027 (Part Two), is expected to coincide with significant holy days in the Catholic calendar, emphasizing its spiritual themes. Part One will premiere on Good Friday, a day commemorating Jesus' crucifixion, while Part Two will follow forty days later on Ascension Day, marking the ascension of Jesus into heaven.
"The Resurrection of the Christ" continues the story after Jesus Christ's crucifixion, with a focus on the resurrection and its impact on his disciples and followers. There is speculation that the narrative may explore the three days between Jesus' death and resurrection, including the Christian belief in Jesus' descent into Hell (the Harrowing of Hell), rather than solely the resurrection event itself.
Jim Caviezel, who played Jesus in "The Passion of the Christ," is set to reprise his role in the sequels. The films aim to be more than spectacle—intended as a sacred and profound reflection in line with Gibson’s faith and the legacy of the original film.
Lionsgate chairman Adam Fogelson praised Gibson as "one of the greatest directors," and announced the studio's involvement in "The Resurrection of the Christ" in May. The films are being released by Hollywood studio Lionsgate.
"The Passion of the Christ," which was shot in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Latin, was criticized for being antisemitic and for its graphic violence. Despite these criticisms, the film grossed over $610 million worldwide, making it a commercial success for a subtitled film.
Mel Gibson, a devout Catholic, reportedly funded "The Passion of the Christ" to the tune of $30 million. His latest film, "Flight Risk," was released in February 2022. Gibson won two Oscars for the historical epic "Braveheart" in 1996.
Production on "The Resurrection of the Christ" sequels is expected to begin in Europe later in 2022. As the release dates approach, anticipation for these films continues to grow, with fans eager to see how Gibson will continue the story of Jesus Christ.
Movies-and-tv enthusiasts and followers of Christian themes eagerly anticipate the upcoming two-part movie series titled "The Resurrection of the Christ," produced by Mel Gibson, who is known for his work in the entertainment industry, particularly historical epics. These films, set to premiere in spring 2022, will air on Good Friday (Part One) and Ascension Day (Part Two), with a focus on Jesus Christ's resurrection and its impact, as part of the moviemaker's sacred and profound reflection of his faith and the legacy of his previous film, "The Passion of the Christ."
