Upcoming Highlights of Archival Assembly #3 in 2024

The third edition of Archival Assembly, a cross-media archival project, is taking place from 17th to 22nd September at Arsenal on Location, Frankfurt am Main. This year's theme is 'Resounding Archives: The Politics of Listening to the Moving Image', which invites attendees to critically engage with archives and explore the politics embedded in listening to and interpreting moving images from historical and political perspectives.

The program consists of curated screenings and an exhibition revisiting the activities and films from the first three editions of Archival Assembly (2021, 2023, and 2025). Some of the notable films to be screened include Youssef Fahdeh's 1958 debut film Fi Al-Dar Ghariba, Prem Kapoor's Badnam Basti (often described as India's first gay film), and Maya Deren's Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti.

In addition to the screenings, Archival Assembly #3 will feature two expert talks titled "sinema transtopia". These talks will take place at Lindower Str. 20/22/Haus C, Wedding, and are free of charge. Details for the talks can be found online.

Other films to be screened include Robina Rose's Nightshift, which was shot over five nights at the Portobello Hotel in West London, and Resonance Spiral by Filipa César & Marinho de Pina.

A video installation titled Whose Voice is This? by Dana Iskakova is also on display at Arsenal 1. This installation explores sound, speech, and music in locally-produced cinema from the 1960s to the 1990s.

The opening programme of Archival Assembly #3 includes eight short film screenings, a screening of the documentary Kassieren, and a screening of Maria Thereza Alves' Bruce Lee in the Land of Balzac.

The cross-media archival project ARchipelago has designed an engaging augmented reality experience and accompanying talk focusing on the war and postwar periods of former Yugoslavia.

For those interested in attending, more information about the screenings and talks can be found on the Archival Assembly website. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to delve into the politics of listening to the moving image and revisit some of the most significant films from the past few years.
