Upcoming German Bundestag Elections 2025: Franz Hofmaier Candidacy for the Free Democratic Party (ÖDP)

In the German constituency of Ingolstadt, Franz Hofmaier, former member of the city council (2002-2017) and current direct candidate for the ÖDP (Ecological Democratic Party), has unveiled a set of proposals aimed at addressing climate change and enhancing European security.

Hofmaier, whose main motivations for running are concern for peace among people and concern for peace between humans and nature, has expressed concern about the slow pace of the necessary political shift towards climate action. He finds it troubling that German CEOs see China becoming climate-neutral before Germany, indicating a lack of priority. To combat this, Hofmaier advocates for a faster energy transition with clear CO2 goals, linked to socially just climate adaptation policies.

One of Hofmaier's proposals is the establishment of a new European Security Conference. This forum would aim to enhance cooperation on issues like defense, conflict prevention, cybersecurity, and crisis management across Europe, in response to changing geopolitical dynamics. The purpose of this conference, as suggested by Hofmaier, is to bring all negotiating parties to the table to work towards a difficult but face-saving path to a ceasefire. In the context of the war in Ukraine, Hofmaier could imagine a new European Security Conference.

Another key proposal is taxing the wealth of the richest one percent of the population more heavily. The raised revenue would then be allocated to climate initiatives, such as renewable energy projects, climate adaptation, and environmental conservation efforts. This idea reflects Hofmaier's concerns about the pressures on economy and society due to climatic and geopolitical realities, neglected infrastructure, and heavily indebted public finances.

Maintaining stability in the economy and society will be a big challenge, which can be mastered with peace with nature and a resource-saving circular economy, says Hofmaier. He suggests a speed limit on highways as a small contribution to climate protection, but notes it was not feasible.

Hofmaier was unanimously elected by the members of the ÖDP district in Ingolstadt. His involvement with the party is rooted in its independence from company and association donations, a characteristic that aligns with his focus on ecological sustainability, social justice, and democracy.

These proposals, if implemented, would mark a significant step towards addressing climate change and enhancing European security, reflecting the commitment of the ÖDP Ingolstadt branch to systemic measures in these areas.
