Upcoming General Election 2024: Crucial Dates for Monarch's Address and Following Budget Proposal

New Government Takes Shape in the UK

After a hard-fought general election, Sir Keir Starmer's Labour Party has secured a 170-seat majority, marking a significant change in the political landscape of the United Kingdom. King Charles III has appointed Sir Keir Starmer as the new Prime Minister.

The new government is gearing up for its first official days in office. Parliament will formally return on Tuesday, 9th July, and MPs will line up to swear an oath to the King on the same day. The following days will see MPs getting their feet back under their old desks and learning the ropes before the Parliamentary calendar kicks off in a meaningful way.

The King's Speech, which outlines the legislative agenda for the political year ahead, will take place on Wednesday, 17th July. Less-important ministerial posts will be divvied out over the weekend, while the major roles in the cabinet, such as Chancellor of the Exchequer, will begin to be filled this afternoon.

During the pre-election period, government ministers remained in their positions, but there were restrictions about what they could do. Government resources cannot be used for party political purposes, and ministers are not allowed to undermine the impartiality of the civil service during this time. Any breach of these conventions is likely to be a breach of the ministerial code.

MPs will decide who chairs the Select Committees that hold the government to account, as well as who should sit on them, next week. The policy agenda set out in Sir Keir Starmer's manifesto includes reforming wealth taxes, boosting the property market, and widening access to physical banking.

It's worth noting that there may be a Parliamentary recess at some point, potentially in late-July or August, but the start and end dates have yet to be determined. The new government's first Budget or fiscal event will take place on Friday, 13th September, assuming the new government issues an instruction to the Office for Budget Responsibility on 5th July.

Meanwhile, opposition party leaders may step down from their roles between the election date and the King's Speech. Sir Keir Starmer is expected to put together a cabinet team over the coming hours.

In Germany, during the 2024 general election campaign, the government was led by a coalition of the CDU/CSU (Union) and SPD under Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The specifics of the UK's political landscape are now changing, but the principles of democracy and accountability remain the same.

As the dust settles and the new government takes shape, the British public eagerly awaits the policies and changes that will come in the year ahead.
