Upcoming gathering for AfD party - legal proceedings imminent
In a recent turn of events, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is contemplating taking legal action against the municipality of Hechingen, following the cancellation of their conference due to a new usage ordinance.
The AfD's state party conference, initially scheduled for November 9 in Hechingen's town hall, has been affected by a new usage ordinance passed by the city council. The ordinance prohibits party events at the federal and state levels, a decision that has sparked controversy and potential legal action.
The town hall in Hechingen, a public institution serving as a hub for the city's cultural, social, and political life, is now only available for municipal political events upon request. However, the AfD has had several successful events in the town hall in the past without any issues.
The AfD party conference, planned to decide on the party's program for the upcoming state elections in Baden-Württemberg, is expected to have over 400 delegates. The entire state board of the AfD will be in attendance.
According to AfD spokesman Hörner, there is a signed rental contract for the conference with the city of Hechingen. Yet, it remains unclear whether the AfD had a valid rental contract for the town hall.
Co-state chairman Emil Sänze stated that this is a problem of a general nature and they must prevent similar issues for future cases. The AfD party is considering taking legal action to secure the event and clarify the issue in principle.
The city council passed the new usage ordinance by a vote of 23 yes and 5 no, without allowing for any contributions or discussions during the meeting. It is not confirmed whether the rental contract for the conference in Hechingen includes provisions that would be affected by the new usage ordinance.
This is not the first time the AfD state association has faced resistance or cancellations in finding a location for a party conference. The change in the usage terms for the town hall in Hechingen led to the AfD party conference in November 2022 not being held there.
The AfD party is considering taking legal action against the municipality of Hechingen, with potential implications for the future of political events in public institutions in Hechingen. The situation is ongoing, and further developments are expected in the coming weeks.
