Upcoming Federal-Lander Summit
The scheduled corona summit between the German federal and state governments, initially set for Monday, is facing uncertainty as disagreements persist among the parties involved.
Chancellor Angela Merkel, along with the Minister Presidents of North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria, have advocated for a nationwide hard lockdown lasting 2-3 weeks. However, this proposal is met with resistance from some states, particularly Schleswig-Holstein, Saxony-Anhalt, and the Saarland, which prefer moderate openings with testing obligations.
The proposed amendment to the Infection Protection Act aims to grant the federal government the power to issue nationwide uniform corona regulations. However, the passage of this amendment through the Bundesrat is currently facing opposition, potentially causing delays in the implementation of uniform regulations. A postponement of the meeting is also being discussed.
The decrease in infection numbers over Easter may have been due to closed health authorities and fewer tests, according to early indicators, which are now turning back towards an increase. This uncertain trend has caused concerns for Merkel, who stated on March 28 that she would not just sit back and watch for 14 days without anything happening that really promises a turning point.
The SPD states would support nationwide uniform regulations, but this is currently failing due to the disagreement among the CDU states. The SPD states consider a decision on a hard lockdown unnecessary as many states have already decided on exit restrictions.
The alternative date for the summit depends on the passing of the amendment to the Infection Protection Act by the Bundestag. If the amendment is passed, the summit may still take place on Monday, but no decisions are expected. If not, the summit is being discussed for a possible alternative date on Wednesday.
The federal and state governments are divided on what should come out of the meeting on Monday or Wednesday. The uncertainty surrounding the corona summit reflects the ongoing challenges in navigating the pandemic and reaching a consensus on the appropriate response.
While the specifics of the corona summit remain unclear, it is crucial to monitor the situation closely, as the decisions made could have significant implications for the ongoing fight against the pandemic in Germany. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, it is recommended to follow official announcements from the German federal and state governments.
