Upcoming European Elections in 2024: Initial Outcomes Unveiled in the Region of Bremen
In a significant shift in the political landscape, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) has emerged victorious in the European elections held in Bremen and Bremerhaven, marking their first victory in this election since 2009. The SPD secured 21.5% of the votes, narrowly outpacing the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) who came in second place with 19.8%.
The CDU, on the other hand, experienced a slight increase in their vote share compared to the 2019 European elections, where they had 16.8% of the votes. However, they saw a decrease of 2.1 percentage points in the recent elections.
The Greens, who had 14.2% in the 2019 European elections, also saw a change in their fortunes. They managed to take third place this time around, but with a significantly worse election result of 16.2%. This represents a loss of 6.5 percentage points compared to their performance in the 2019 elections.
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) showed an improvement in their results, coming in fourth place with 10.2% of the votes. This is an increase of 2.5 percentage points compared to their performance in the last European election.
Overall voter turnout in Bremen and Bremerhaven was 57%, a slight decrease from the 63% recorded in the 2019 European elections.
It's worth noting that no party in the recent elections achieved an absolute majority. The next European election in Bremen is scheduled for 2024.
These results reflect a shifting political landscape in Bremen and Bremerhaven, with the SPD securing a long-awaited victory and the Greens experiencing a significant drop in their vote share. The CDU and AfD also saw changes in their fortunes, with the CDU gaining slightly and the AfD improving their position.
