Upcoming Elections in 2027: Ogun PDP, Adebutu Favor Tinubu for a Second Term in Office

Ogun State PDP Endorses Bola Tinubu for 2027 Presidential Elections

In a surprising turn of events, the Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared their support for President Bola Tinubu as their preferred candidate for the 2027 presidential election. This decision, despite Tinubu being a member of the opposing All Progressives Congress (APC), marks a regional deviation from the national party's official stance.

During the official campaign flag-off of the PDP for the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North federal constituency bye-election held in Sagamu, the Ogun PDP Chairman, Abayomi Tella, described Tinubu as "the father of the nation" and emphasized the importance of regional solidarity. He stated, "We will support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Though he is in the opposition, let us support our own from the Southwest. Our support is for Tinubu, and we will stand by him. We are ready to give him our votes. The whole of the Southwest will give him our votes."

Ladi Adebutu, the PDP's former gubernatorial candidate and the party's candidate for the bye-election, echoed Tella's sentiments. Adebutu, who had previously expressed support for Tinubu’s re-election, stressed the importance of ensuring a free, fair, and credible electoral process. He said, "I was with the President in January and I told him that we have no issue with his leadership and candidacy." However, Adebutu also made it clear that the party would not spare Governor Dapo Abiodun over alleged poor governance in Ogun State. He stated, "We, however, have an issue with bad governance in Ogun State. That is why we must have this platform to challenge bad governance."

The PDP's endorsement of Tinubu comes amidst a warning from the national PDP to its members against endorsing Tinubu’s second term and threats of sanctions for those who do so. The party's stance on Tinubu’s 2027 candidacy reflects a notable deviation from the national party line.

The PDP has inaugurated a 55-man campaign committee for the bye-election, with Hon. Damilare Bello as the chairman and Arc Kayode Adebayo as the Director-General. The party's candidate for the bye-election, Bolarinwa Oluwole, called on Governor Abiodun to ensure a peaceful poll free of electoral malpractice. The PDP remains focused on strengthening its position in the state through the upcoming bye-election.

The article was published by "our website," a division of Polance Media Inc., in 2025. The PDP National Vice Chairman, Kamorudeen Ajisafe, officially presented the party's flag to Oluwole. Tella also stated, "We are going to support him. We will give him our votes. All we want in that election is fairness and justice."

The ruling APC has lost goodwill due to its performance in governance, providing an opportunity for the PDP to challenge the APC's dominance in Ogun State and restore good governance. The party's endorsement of Tinubu for the 2027 elections, therefore, signals a strategic move aimed at securing regional support while maintaining a critical stance on local issues.

  1. The Ogun State PDP's endorsement of Bola Tinubu, despite his affiliation with the opposition APC, marks a departure from the national party's official stance on Tinubu's 2027 presidential candidacy.
  2. Ladi Adebutu, the PDP's former gubernatorial candidate, emphasized the importance of a free, fair, and credible electoral process while expressing support for Tinubu's leadership and candidacy.
  3. Despite national PDP warnings against endorsing Tinubu's 2027 candidacy, the Ogun PDP remains focused on securing regional support and challenging the APC's dominance in Ogun State.
  4. The PDP's strategic move in endorsing Tinubu for the 2027 elections could lead to a restoration of good governance in Ogun State and a potential shift in the country's political landscape.
  5. This unexpected shift in regional politics is part of the general news and policy-and-legislation discourse, also encompassing topics like migration, war-and-conflicts, and other political developments in Nigeria (Naija).
