Upcoming details regarding the September 28th by-elections

In the city of Marl, Germany, runoff elections will take place on September 28, 2025, for the mayoral office and the district administrator (Landrat) position.

For the mayoral race, Thomas Terhorst (CDU/FDP) and Werner Arndt (SPD) will face off, following the first round of voting. The candidates for the district administrator position are Bodo Klimpel (CDU/FDP) and Dr. Karsten Schneider (SPD), who received the highest votes in the first round. Steffen Christ (AfD) did not advance to the runoff.

Absentee ballots can be requested for the runoff elections and will be available starting Friday, September 19. Voters can request them informally by email, post, online, or in person at the election office, which is located at the island-VHS at Wiesenstraße 22. The election office has reopened with the following hours: Monday and Tuesday from 8 am to 4 pm, Wednesday and Friday from 8 am to 12:30 pm, and Thursday from 8 am to 6 pm. On Friday, September 26, before the runoff, the election office will remain open until 3 pm.

Voters must bring their voting notification, personal ID, or valid identity card or passport for voting at the polling station. Voting will take place in the same polling stations as the recent local elections.

All eligible voters in Marl aged 16 and above are invited to the runoff elections on September 28. It is important to note that unlike the local elections, voters will not receive a specific voting notification for the runoff elections. However, voters who requested absentee ballots for the local elections will automatically receive them for the runoff. Around 14,500 Marl voters have already done so.

A simple majority will decide both runoff elections. The deadline for absentee voting is Friday, September 26, at 3 pm. Voting at the election office will also be possible from that date.
