The small, picturesque town of Champton in 1980s England becomes the setting for a captivating murder mystery in the new six-part drama, Murder Before Evensong. This series, based on the popular novels by the Reverend Richard Coles, follows Canon Daniel Clement, the Rector of Champton, as he navigates a controversial plan to modernize the church by installing a lavatory.

Canon Daniel Clement, played by Matthew Lewis (known for his role as Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter movies), lives in the church rectory with his opinionated, widowed mother Audrey, portrayed by Amanda Redman (New Tricks). The announcement of the modernization plan divides the parish community, and the situation escalates when the cousin of the town's patron, Bernard de Floures, is found murdered at the back of the church, stabbed with a pair of secateurs.

As more bodies appear and the police investigate, Daniel is compelled to hold the fractured community together and solve the murder mystery. The series, described as a cosy British crime drama, appeals to fans of traditional English mysteries like Midsomer Murders.

The series was adapted by Nick Hicks-Beach, known for his work on Midsomer Murders and EastEnders. It was produced by The Lighthouse and filmed with support from the West Midlands Production Fund. AMC Networks handles global content sales for the series, and Acorn TV maintains worldwide rights to Murder Before Evensong outside of the UK.

The series was filmed in the West Midlands, England, in early 2025, and a trailer for the series has been recently released by Acorn TV. The series is set to premiere on Acorn TV on September 29, 2025, in the US and around the world. In the UK, it will air later in the year on Acorn TV and Channel 5, though the exact release date is yet to be announced.

The cast includes Nina Toussaint-White as Jane Thwaite, Francis Magee as Edgy, Amanda Hadingue as Dora, Amit Shah as DS Neil Vanloo, Marion Bailey as Kath, Meghan Treadway as Honor De Floures, and Tamzin Outhwaite as Stella Harper. Adam James portrays Bernard De Floures, and the series was directed by Radford Neville, Executive Producer at The Lighthouse.

The Reverend Richard Coles, author of the series and a member of the 1980s band The Communards, is thrilled about his books being turned into a television series. Coles released his first mystery novel, Murder Before Evensong, in June 2022, and the sequel, A Death in the Parish, was published in June 2023. The third book in the series, Murder at the Monastery, was published a year later.

Paul Testar, Commissioning Editor, Drama, Channel 5, and Catherine Mackin, Managing Director, Acorn Media Enterprises (Acorn TV), are involved in the series. Reverend Richard Coles made the final three on I'm A Celebrity... in 2024, gaining further fame before his books were turned into a television series.

Matthew Lewis is excited to be a part of the series and is looking forward to bringing the character of Canon Clement to life. Fans of cosy British crime dramas and traditional English mysteries will not want to miss Murder Before Evensong when it premieres this fall.
