Upcoming by-elections scheduled for 28th September
On September 28, 2025, Marl will hold a runoff election to decide the winners for the mayoral and county commissioner positions. Here's what you need to know to participate in this important event.
The candidates for the mayoral position are Thomas Terhorst (CDU/FDP) and Werner Arndt (SPD). Terhorst received 43.28% of the votes in the previous election, while Arndt received 31.30%. For the county commissioner position, Bodo Klimpel (CDU/FDP) and Dr. Karsten Schneider (SPD) are the contenders.
Voters who had previously requested vote-by-mail for the local elections will automatically receive vote-by-mail materials for the runoff elections. Vote-by-mail materials will be available starting Friday (19.09.). If you wish to request vote-by-mail materials for the runoff elections, you can do so informally by email, post, online, or in person at the election office starting immediately. The deadline for vote-by-mail is Friday, September 26, at 3 pm.
Voting will take place in the same polling stations as the recent local elections. The polling stations will be open from 8 am to 6 pm on election day. On Friday before the runoff election, the election office will remain open until 3 pm. Voting will also be possible directly at the election office from the date vote-by-mail materials become available.
Voters should bring their voting notification, personal ID, or valid identity card or passport for voting at the polling station. Approximately 14,500 Marl voters have already requested vote-by-mail materials for the runoff elections.
The election office can be reached by phone at (02365) 99-2633. It is located at the island-VHS at Wiesenstraße 22. The election office hours are: Monday and Tuesday from 8 am to 4 pm, Wednesday and Friday from 8 am to 12:30 pm, and Thursday from 8 am to 6 pm.
All eligible voters in Marl aged 16 and above are invited to participate in the runoff elections on September 28. A runoff election for the position of county commissioner will also take place on the same day.
