Upcoming Bundesliga Season 2025/26: Guidelines to Follow
The 2022-2023 Bundesliga season is set to be a groundbreaking one, with a host of new measures aimed at enhancing the game's innovation and progress.
One of the most significant changes is the introduction of semi-automatic offside detection technology. This technology, which has already been used at the 2022 World Cup and in the Champions League, utilises special cameras and AI-assisted tracking for real-time analysis of player and ball movements. The aim is to clarify controversial offside decisions more quickly and accurately.
Another innovation is the use of RefCam, a camera worn by referees, providing exclusive insights from the perspective of the officials. For selected games, fans can expect to enjoy never-before-seen angles, enriching their viewing experience.
The new tracking system in the Bundesliga also captures detailed movement data of players, including speed, direction changes, and running paths. This data is expected to increase comparability between leagues.
To promote fair play, the DFL is focusing on interpersonal measures. Referees, coaches, and captains will meet for a brief exchange in the dressing room before each game to encourage respectful behavior and foster a spirit of fair play.
Starting from the first matchday on August 22, stadium announcements by referees will be introduced in the Bundesliga. In the 2. Bundesliga, this innovation will begin on the 9th matchday, which is October 17. Referees will announce their decisions via their microphone and the stadium loudspeakers whenever they review a decision on the monitor or change a decision upon VAR's advice.
