Upcoming AfD gathering in Hugenottenhalle, Neu-Isenburg sparks public demonstrations
The city of Neu-Isenburg is set to host an election event for the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party at the Huguenot Hall on February 1st. Despite the venue rental being legally binding, the city and local authorities are taking a cautious approach, emphasising the importance of upholding democratic rights while ensuring public safety.
The AfD's event has sparked a wave of counter-protests from various groups and community organisations in Neu-Isenburg. These peaceful demonstrations aim to oppose the party's policies and promote messages of inclusivity and tolerance. The OMAS AGAINST THE RIGHT, a coalition from Frankfurt, Offenbach, Neu-Isenburg, Dreieich, and Langen, is among the organisations leading the counter-protests, committed to setting a sign for democracy and diversity.
Alice Weidel, Chancellor candidate of the AfD, is expected to attend the event, adding another layer of political sensitivity. Local authorities are coordinating security measures to facilitate both the AfD event and the counter-protests, seeking to prevent conflicts and maintain public order.
Mayor Dirk Gene Hagelstein has clarified that the rental of the Huguenot Hall does not constitute support or endorsement of the political positions of the AfD, but rather upholds the democratic rules of the game. The city is bound by the neutrality requirement when allocating the Huguenot Hall.
Post-event, the city of Neu-Isenburg will assess the impact of the AfD event on local affairs. This evaluation aims to ensure compliance with the rule of law and security standards. A follow-up and evaluation of the event's course and impact are planned, underscoring the city's commitment to maintaining a peaceful and inclusive community.
The planned protests underscore the resistance of many people in the region to the political orientation of the AfD, highlighting the importance of open dialogue and community solidarity in promoting democratic values.
Other community groups, beyond the OMAS AGAINST THE RIGHT, are also set to join the counter-protests against the AfD's policies, emphasizing the general news of widespread opposition to the party. Moreover, the migration and war-and-conflicts aspects are intertwined with the political sensitivities, as the counter-protests aim to promote messages of inclusivity, a contrast to the AfD's controversial migration policies and stance on war-and-conflicts.
