Unyielding Demands from Russia Towards Ukraine, Regarded as Unacceptable - Silina's Stance
The Coalition of the Willing, a group of nations united in backing Ukraine against Russian aggression, held a meeting on Sunday to discuss practical preparations and support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The gathering took place following a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin last Friday in Anchorage, Alaska.
During the Trump-Putin meeting, the leaders agreed on "many points", but the details of the talks were not disclosed. Following this meeting, an upcoming meeting between Zelensky and Trump in Washington is scheduled.
Prime Minister Evika Silina (New Unity) of Latvia, a member of the Coalition of the Willing, emphasized the importance of a trilateral meeting between the president of Ukraine, the president of Russia, and the US president. She also stressed the need to be prepared for all scenarios, including the possibility of a ceasefire or a peace treaty, but the specifics remain unclear.
Silina also highlighted the importance of understanding the security guarantees the United States is promising to Ukraine. She questioned whether it would be only military support or actual military presence, and equally important are the US security guarantees for Europe and how they would be provided in Ukraine.
Trump stated that Zelensky could end the war with Russia almost immediately if he wants to, while also suggesting that Zelensky could continue to fight if he chooses. He described the conversation with Putin as "very productive".
The Coalition of the Willing, which includes Latvia, held a meeting to discuss support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders meeting with US President Donald Trump. The meeting was also held to discuss practical preparations and support for Ukraine.
The "Coalition of the Willing" supporting Ukraine includes a broad group of nations primarily from NATO and EU countries, such as the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, Canada, France, and others that have provided military aid, financial support, or humanitarian assistance. The coalition is not an official formal alliance but a flexible grouping of countries united in backing Ukraine against Russian aggression.
Silina also stated that the demands put forward by Russia regarding Ukraine, including the control of Donetsk and a special status for the Russian language, are unacceptable. She also emphasized that Trump is trying to keep Putin at the table, but they should be prepared for a sanctions package if talks fail.
The meeting concluded with the Coalition of the Willing leaders reaffirming their commitment to supporting Ukraine and working towards a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict. The upcoming meeting between Zelensky and Trump in Washington is expected to provide further insights into the future of US-Ukraine relations and the ongoing efforts to address the crisis in Ukraine.
