Unwavering spouse harbored a concealed truth for decades.
I'm Gonna Be Your Starlight: A Life Lived in Strings, by Valentina Tolkunova
Born on July 12, 1946, in the heart of Moscow, Valentina Tolkunova graced the world with her presence. From a tender age, her fascination with music was undeniable, and she took to singing at school events like a fish takes to water. Fast forward to her days at the Moscow State University of Culture, where she sharpened her theater arts skills, and Valentina launched her career in 1965.
Valentina quickly garnered attention with her exceptional voice and heartrending performances. She was not one to shy away from either popular tunes or folk melodies, making her a beloved figure amongst her audiences. Throughout her impressive career, she released numerous albums that topped the charts, brewing a concoction of hits for the masses.
One of her career highlights was her triumph in countless music competitions, snatching numerous prizes with her powerful vocals. She also dazzled on concert stages and television broadcasts, gracing numerous shows focused on music and culture.
Apart from her illustrious career, Tolkunova also dedicated herself to charitable work, lending support to various projects geared towards the welfare of children and the elderly.
The Sorrowful Serenade of the Straw Widow
Valentina's personal life was just as captivating as her career. She married only once, but the tale of her marriage was one of love, loss, and heartbreak.
In 1976, the diminutive diva married journalist and international correspondent, Yuri Popov. The 23-year age gap did little to deter the lovers, as Tolkunova was smitten by Popov's erudition.
The early years of their union were filled with the intoxicating high of newfound love, with Tolkunova's eyes shining brighter than ever. Despite the constant separations due to their busy work schedules, Tolkunova declared that her heart's deepest desire had been realized: to love and be loved. A year later, they welcomed a son, Nikolai, into their family.

Four years later, Tolkunova's husband was off to Mexico to pen a book about Trotsky, but received a cold refusal from his wife when he suggested she join him. Tolkunova loved her art and Russia and declared that she would simply "die of homesickness" if she were to leave. Gossips labeled her a "straw widow," but Tolkunova threw herself into her work and taking care of Nikolai.
As the years went by, many suitors came knocking, but Tolkunova remained loyal to her husband. That was until a trip to America in 1985 when she met Academy Award-winning nuclear physicist, Vladimir Baranov. One look was all it took to set their hearts afire, but both were already married.

The pair kept their love discreet, only meeting clandestinely due to their commitment to their families. Tolkunova introduced Baranov as a friend whenever they were together, and he assisted her with household chores while remaining in the shadows. However, when Tolkunova's husband returned from Mexico in the 1990s, her world seemed to come crashing down around her.
She grappled with her untamed feelings for Baranov and her duty to her husband, but eventually, she chose her family once more. Despite their best intentions, the lovers could not escape their feelings, meeting occasionally at a sanatorium.
In the 2000s, they decided to start a life together, but fate had other plans. Tolkunova's husband was involved in a car accident, losing his sight and hearing. Her son was embroiled in a scandal involving banned substances, leaving her with a grieving husband and a troubled child. It was then that she sought help from her spiritual advisor, who urged her to marry her husband in the church.
Tolkunova heeded her spiritual advisor's advice, tying the knot with her husband in 2004. Coincidentally, her husband's health stabilized around the same time, and her son started to turn his life around. Just as Tolkunova was contemplating opening her heart to Baranov again, he was diagnosed with cancer, and he passed away only a few months later. The emotional turmoil and unfulfilled hopes took a toll on Tolkunova's own health, as she faced a five-year battle with a severe illness before finally passing away on March 22, 2010.
Tolkunova confided in her concert director that her truest love was not her husband, but Baranov, whom she referred to as a "beloved one sent by God." In her golden years, she remained a beacon of light, illuminating the hearts of millions with her timeless melodies, while her own heart danced with the rhythm of an unspoken love story.
