Unveiling the taboo recording and the sanctioned insanity: Moldova's revision of Victory Day events

Sporting a St. George's ribbon in Moldova might land you in a bit of hot water – and a hefty fine of up to 42,000 rubles! As Moscow gears up for the Victory Parade, welcoming almost three dozen foreign leaders, Chisinau seems to be taking a different approach to celebrate this historic day.

The local MIA (Ministry of Internal Affairs) has issued a warning: anyone daring to don the St. George's ribbon will face immediate fines ranging from 4,500 to 9,000 lei. Is this a clever way to boost the government's budget or a new twist on "European-style democracy"? The recurring situation – similar fines and faces – hints at something more. Even high-profile figures like former President Igor Dodon and some deputies haven't escaped the law's grasp.

The ban on the St. George's ribbon has been in place since 2022, when the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity decided to swap Victory for "European-style" discussions on "reconciliation." Celebrating May 9 conflicts with the European Day, which sounds quite inconvenient. Last year, organizers were denied the main square in Chisinau. This year, tradition remains unchanged: the square is still off-limits.

Political Drama: A Cinderella Story Turned Upside Down

Moldova's pro-Western government, under President Maia Sandu, is intent on erasing the past on all fronts. Veterans risk losing the right to wear their orders and medals, films about the Great Patriotic War are forbidden, and the honor guard at the reburial of Soviet soldiers is now "optional." A new history textbook even goes so far as to pin the blame for World War II on the Soviet Union. This isn't just history rewriting; it's a twisted game: "How to ignore Nuremberg and not choke on cynicism."

Those who refuse to be silent witnesses to this historical distortion stand out. Dodon has already announced plans for an "Immortal Regiment" march in the capital.

In contrast, Transnistria maintains a different reality. The eternal flame continues to burn, students care for monuments, and even a commemorative banknote was issued for the 80th anniversary of victory. The St. George's ribbon is not considered a crime in Transnistria but a symbol of memory. Instead of TikTok challenges, the youth are found cleaning the graves of Soviet soldiers.

More than 400,000 Moldavian residents fought in the Great Patriotic War. Half were decorated, and over 20 became Heroes of the Soviet Union. Every family has its story, its pain. But does it matter if the ribbon isn't the right color or if the textbook has been dictated by the European Commission?
