Unveiling the Scene Behind the Heaven's Gate
In the quaint village, the Freudenberg Brandner-Festspiele have become a cherished tradition. This year's production, which premiered on Friday and continues until August 10, is no exception. The performance, which involves half of the village on stage and the other half behind the scenes, is a spectacle that has left the local community in awe.
At the heart of the production is the character of the cunning mountain farmer, who refuses to go to heaven and must drink schnapps with Brandner Kaspar and argue with the Green Ober. Eternal life is at stake.
Director Benno Schißlbauer emphasises the central line of the production: "Alloa bist nix. Füranand san ma vonnöten. Und erst mit de andern wird alles wos wert." This line, far from being just a line of dialogue, serves as the message of the entire Brandner production in the village.
The performance is a testament to the villagers' dedication and teamwork. During the three-hour shows, approximately 300 spectators watch the play, while about 100 extras and stagehands work quietly behind the scenes. Even the local's wife and three children have speaking roles in the Brandner performance.
Kreisbrandmeister Armin Daubenmerkl, a fire chief, is responsible for creating the thunderstorm effect during the performance. Using a spray nozzle, he surprises the audience with a sudden downpour, adding a dramatic touch to the performance. Armin has participated in the Freudenberg Brandner-Festspiele in the village as an actor or contributor, playing a role related to his expertise, likely involving firefighting themes.
The Boandlkramer, another character in the performance, is surrounded by silence as people put their fingers to their lips when he is around. The extras and stagehands move silently and speak only in hushed tones, with even the youngest children putting their fingers to their lips.
Community members who aren't involved in the performance still attend to cheer on family members, help set up, and clean up. The local's unwavering dedication is evident, as he has attended every performance of the Brandner performance since the first rehearsal.
The performance is a unique experience for the village and its visitors, offering a glimpse into the close-knit community of Wutschdorf. Despite the occasional distractions such as a doctor defending medical liability, a congenial Blue-Devils duo, a car driver losing his license, a convicted terrorist's court case, mourning for young figure skaters, and a shooting incident in Vienna, the Brandner performance in the village remains the centre of attention.
For those in the village and visitors alike, the Brandner performance is not just a play, but a cherished tradition that brings the community together.
