Of all the renowned musicians gracing the stage, none quite captures the spirit of versatility quite like Florin Paul. Born in Romania, this virtuoso began his journey on the path of music stardom early, winning the first prize in Romania's music schools at the tender age of 11.
His Musical Journey
Under the tutelage of Prof. Stefan Georghiu, he honed his skills and secured prestigious international awards such as the 1st prize at the Paganini Competition (1979) and the Grand Prix at the Thibaud Competition (1977). Not one to rest on his laurels, Florin completed his soloist diploma in Freiburg under the guidance of Prof. Wolfgang Marschner.
His trophy case continues to fill with more accolades, including the Louis Spohr Prize (1982, Freiburg), the Mendelssohn Prize (1983, Berlin), as well as the Tibor Varga and Yehudi Menuhin Prizes. In partnership with the esteemed Henryk Szeryng, he performed Bach's Double Concerto in both Berlin and Stuttgart within the framework of the Bach Academy Stuttgart.
A Multifaceted Performer
Florin Paul's repertoire stretches beyond the symphony orchestra; he's a passionate and seasoned chamber musician. Whether collaborating in duos, trios, or quartets, or lending his expertise to radio and CD recordings with various partners, his discography spans a wide range of works. Notable among them are Vivaldi's "Four Seasons," Mozart's Sinfonia concertante, Bach's solo partitas and sonatas, Ysaÿe's solo sonatas, and a "Hommage à Joseph Joachim."
Teaching and Leadership
As accomplished as he is in performance, Florin Paul has also shared his knowledge with future generations of musicians. He has served as a guest professor at the Gothenburg Music Academy, a tutor for several youth orchestras in Hamburg and Bremen, at the Orchestra Academy of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, and with the Asian Youth Orchestra in Hong Kong.
His journey as a renowned orchestral leader began in earnest in 1983 when he became the 1st concertmaster of the Munich Philharmonic under Sergiu Celibidache. Subsequently, he held the same position with the Stuttgart Philharmonic for several years, finally settling in as the 1st concertmaster of the Elbphilharmonie Orchestra since March 20, 1995.
