James Mangold's "Dawn of the Jedi" Star Wars Film: A Journey into the Force's Origins

In an exciting development for Star Wars fans, writer-director James Mangold is working on a new film set in an era called the "Dawn of the Jedi." The movie, yet to have a confirmed title, is expected to delve into the origins of the Jedi Order and the first users of the Force[1][2][3].

Mangold, who has previously worked with Lucasfilm on other projects, has been known for his interest in exploring the roots of established universes. His goal for the "Dawn of the Jedi" film is to create a kind of "Ten Commandments of the Force."

The story is set roughly 25,000 years before the events of "The Phantom Menace," and it is not about continuing the Star Wars saga forward but rather exploring its origins[4]. Lucasfilm president Kathy Kennedy was reportedly surprised and excited by Mangold's idea to go far back in time for the film[5].

The script, being co-written by Mangold and Beau Willimon, is expected to be completed by the summer, with filming potentially starting in December 2025[2]. However, given the production timeline, a release date is likely to be several years away, possibly around May 2029 based on speculative scheduling[1].

Mangold has expressed his desire to be part of the Star Wars saga without holding too much lore that hinders storytelling. He is currently preparing a Bob Dylan movie, but his focus remains on the "Dawn of the Jedi" project[6].

It's worth noting that Mangold has also been mentioned in regards to a project at DC, specifically Swamp Thing[7]. The future releases of Marvel, Star Wars, Star Trek, DC Universe, and Doctor Who can be found on io9[8].

Meanwhile, fans of another beloved franchise, Indiana Jones, can look forward to the release of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny on June 30.
