In September 2024, Kyle Pietila found himself in the spotlight after being arrested in Red Bank, New Jersey, for Simple Assault. The news was reported by several local outlets, including Red Bank Green, and editor Brian Donohue initially covered the story. However, Donohue later updated the item to say that the arrest was expunged.

Pietila's arrest, initially a private matter, took a public turn when he demanded that the blotter item about his arrest be removed from Red Bank Green. His efforts backfired, as the small item about his arrest is now featured in multiple stories in New Jersey and beyond. Pietila's case was eventually dismissed, and his record was expunged.

In a different turn of events, a few months prior, Andrea Velez was arrested for allegedly assaulting a federal officer. The criminal complaint against Velez stated that she stood in the path of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer with her arms extended, striking his head and chest when they collided. After Velez's attorney sought body-camera video, the feds dropped the case.

The issue of publishing names in blotters is ethically murky, but Red Bank Green reported Velez's arrest, as they do with all arrests in the town. The surge in arrests by ICE agents is a contributing factor to the reported increase in assaults on ICE officers, with assaults on these officers reported to have increased by 830 percent. However, the source of this statistic is unclear.

Meanwhile, efforts to investigate reports of Medicaid fraud have been ongoing. Reporters have found evidence of companies billing for housing services that didn't occur. One company, in particular, billed Medicaid 46 different times, each time claiming to have spent two hours helping a couple find housing, but the couple said they received no help. The state opened an investigation after a story about Medicaid fraud was published.

Notably, Rupert Murdoch, ninety-four years old, has maintained his stance against pressure, refusing to cave to pressure from Donald Trump to spike a blockbuster story about Jeffrey Epstein. Similarly, the US attorney's failure to obtain some indictments over recent immigration protests has been the subject of a report by the Los Angeles Times.

In the midst of these events, the DHS has provided updates on the percentage increase in assaults without releasing the full underlying data. The US attorney's failure to secure indictments has been attributed to grand jurors' skepticism of prosecutors' evidence and good faith.

Despite the challenges, journalists continue to uncover the truth, ensuring that the public is informed and aware of the happenings in their community and beyond.
