In August 1987, actor Matthew Broderick was involved in a car accident in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. The accident resulted in the tragic deaths of Anna Gallagher, aged 28, and her mother Margaret Doherty, who was 63 years old.

Broderick and his co-star Jennifer Grey were driving a rented BMW when the accident occurred. Grey emerged relatively unscathed but was covered in Broderick's blood. Broderick, however, does not remember the accident.

Following the incident, Broderick was charged with careless driving, a less serious charge than dangerous driving. The charge and the subsequent fine of $175 were seen as a "travesty of justice" by the family of the victims, who felt that the penalty was too light given the severity of the outcome.

In the days following the crash, Broderick wrote a note to the Doherty family expressing his remorse. There was no further contact between Broderick and the family after the note.

Grey considered the car accident to be one of the "top three traumas of [her] life". Broderick, too, struggled in the years following the accident and sought professional help to cope.

Martin Doherty, who lost his mother and sister in the crash, expressed his feelings about Broderick's punishment in the Belfast Telegraph. Initially, the family questioned whether Broderick had received lenient treatment due to his celebrity status. However, in 2002, Martin Doherty publicly forgave Broderick.

Reports suggested that Broderick was going to meet with the Doherty family for closure, but it is unclear if the meeting ever took place. Grey accepted that the crash was a tragic accident and not the result of Broderick's negligence.

Broderick's car accident remains a significant event in his life and career, serving as a stark reminder of the consequences of careless driving. The incident also underscores the complexities of justice and forgiveness in the face of tragedy.
