Alimkul, another dombra player, was drawn to Abuov due to their shared roots in the Zhambyl region. After discovering they had both composed a tribute to Abuov's most well-known piece, "Arnau," they dedicated themselves to this project.
"Arnau," also known as "Kazakhstan Komsomol," was born out of the horrors of war. When a group of soldiers from their homeland were killed on the front lines, Abuov, who was wounded, survived and vowed to honor their sacrifice through music.
"The tank bearing the symbol of Kazakhstan Komsomol was the last thing Turash saw before losing consciousness," Alimkul explains. "When he woke up, the reality hit him hard—everyone he knew was gone. His mourning turned into a tribute, a powerful kui that resonated with everyone who heard it."
Abuov's kuis do much more than simply reflect the grim reality of war; they offer a vivid, personal portrayal of the Kazakh soldiers who fought. Alimkul highlights this aspect of Abuov's work, calling it a unique contribution to Kazakh music history.
