Unveiled: Plans for Queen Elizabeth II's national memorial revealed, inviting public feedback

How Five Spectacular Plans Unveil a Memorial for Queen Elizabeth II

A grand tribute awaits the late Queen in the heart of London, as St James's Park will be home to a breathtaking national memorial. Five innovative designs have surfaced, each offering their own unique twist on commemorating Her Majesty. Here's a sneak peek at these impressive plans:

  1. Heatherwick Studio

Descend into a world of 70 giant, limestone lilypads, each symbolizing a year of the Queen's glorious reign. This eye-catching design by Heatherwick Studio also includes a statue of the Queen underneath a canopy of eight stunning sculptural lilies, making it one of the most vibrant proposals.

  1. Tom Stuart-Smith

This proposal focuses on a replica of the 900-year-old Signing Oak from Great Windsor Park, seemingly floating on the lake. Surrounding it would be a path formed from stones from across the United Kingdom, leading to a new figurative sculpture of the Queen and various bronzes. As you walk, listen to the 'soundscape of memories' echoing throughout and find touchpoints that emit authentic Commonwealth sounds.

  1. Wilkinson Eyre

Embark on a tranquil, contemplative journey inspired by seven decades of the Queen's service. A network of pathways, bridges, and landscapes woven through St James's Park will allow visitors to reflect on the defining themes of Her Majesty's life, such as Reign, Faith, Commonwealth, Values, Nature, Family, and Prince Philip.

  1. Foster + Partners

Prepare to be captivated by a cluster of Royal gardens engineered by Foster + Partners. The design features innovative digital installations showcasing new figurative sculptures of the Queen and Prince Philip, along with a Wind Sculpture by Yinka Shonibare and a Unity Bridge. Listen to the Queen's voice and explore an ever-evolving digital conservatory, accessible from the site or anywhere in the world.

  1. J&L Gibbons

Wander through a bridge crafted from stone from the four nations, meandering beneath the park's high tree canopy like a living river. This thought-provoking proposal creates a sense of unity, symbolizing Queen Elizabeth II as the bedrock of the nation. Along the way, visit various points that lead to special destinations such as the Whispering Walk and Magnolia Glade.

Remember, these innovative designs have a tight budget of £23 million to £46 million, so be sure to offer your valuable feedback to help choose the winner this summer.

Once the winning design is chosen, a separate search for a talented sculptor will commence to work alongside the winner in crafting this amazing tribute to Queen Elizabeth II.
